American Attack on Caracas Raises Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Annexation.

The latest US-led strike in Venezuela and the seizure of its president have renewed apprehension regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly turned their attention to the resource-rich island following the events in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely hours following the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, posted a suggestive image. The graphic showed Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, with the single-word message: "COMING."

This overt threat to absorb the mineral-rich land, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to guarantee security in the North."

The ambassador further highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its defence spending this year, earmarking a substantial sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we demand complete respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the recent naming of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's decisive move, linking it to the wider "war on drugs."

Since assuming office, the American leader has consistently unnerved transatlantic partners with his stated desire in Greenland. The island is viewed as critically strategic for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It already hosts the most northerly US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant media interview, the leader refused to rule out the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during intensifying great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's inhabitants desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no desire to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Military experts are increasingly re-evaluating the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis conceded she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
