Astronaut Shares Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
